Jesus spoke in parables. Just scroll through the pages of the Gospels in order to have the test. And we must not assume that he did rarely, judging by the number of parables that the evangelists have transmitted. Some steps lead to even think that Jesus did not speak to people in another way than in parables. One gets the impression that Jesus considered this mode of expression as the most appropriate to the understanding of the listeners and therefore not best suited to effectively communicate its message.

Who are they, then, recipients of this talk in figures? Questions like these open the way for a broad reflection. We will limit ourselves to suggest some general consideration in light of the Gospel texts. One thing, however, it should be stated as of now: that we face is not simply a matter of exegesis. The stakes are much higher. Behind the question: "Why did Jesus spoke in parables," is in fact a very current and very serious issue: that of "religious language" of how to speak properly of God today.
